H&M starting a revolution in Malaysia

Is H&M starting a revolution in Malaysia?

October 01, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 — When it was first announced that H&M, the Swedish fast fashion giant, was coming to our shores, most of us thought it would be a great addition to the retail scene.

But nobody knew how big an impact it would make until Sept22, the day of H&M officially opened its doors to the Malaysian public.

More than 1,500 people stood for hours under the hot sun so they could be the first to get into the three-storey shop located in Lot 10.

In fact, a couple of them had even stayed overnight at the mall.

With unbelievably affordable prices — the likes of which you could only find in blog shops or places like Berjaya Times Square and Sungei Wang Plaza — it is no surprise that even on a workday afternoon after more than a week of its opening, the place was packed to the seams.

Queues at changing rooms were almost half-an-hour long. Sizes ran out so quickly, you just had to be really lucky or be the right size!

In contrast to the frenzy at H&M, ZARA next door was fairly quiet and at the other end of the street, Uniqlo looked empty.

When the Japanese store opened here more than a year ago, it created a similar hype with people lining up to get into the store on opening day.

Today, there are more Uniqlo outlets all over the city, and the frenzy has died down.

A price comparison with other international fast fashion brands plus a local one — Cats Whiskers — reveals a huge surprise. And H&M wins... hands down.

Earlier, shoppers had doubts that H&M would be affordable when it arrived in Malaysia.

In the past, with other mid-price international brands, what was supposed to be affordable in the United States or the UK ended up priced at a premium here.

Now that we have seen with our own eyes how reasonable the prices are for H&M, it's going to be a challenge now for the other fast fashion retailers in Malaysia to keep up with the new competition.

People will still buy ZARA, Mango, Cats Whiskers and Uniqlo, but if they can find something more fashionable at a better price, they are more likely to choose the value for money option.

"I'm more likely to shop in H&M now that it's open here. I find the prices even cheaper compared to the H&M in Singapore and Hong Kong,” said Cherry Wong, 24, audio engineer, who was shopping at H&M.

“Comparatively, the fashion and quality is as good as ZARA, Topshop and Mango. I really don't mind the queues because at last, there is a place where I can be fashionable for cheaper."

Malaysian are becoming more discerning when it comes to fashion and the best part is, you can never tell how much a piece of clothing costs unless you look at the brand or price tag.
